Nov 05, 2013 (newstodate): Latvia's Riga Airport set a new record in volumes of cargo handled in October.
A total of 7,809 tonnes of cargo was handled - an increase by 215 tonnes, y-o-y, and beating the earlier record set in April 2012 when 7,519 tonnes of cargo was handled.
During the first 10 months of this year the airport has thus seen its total cargo volumes rising to 46,995 tonnes, up 69.6 percent, y-o-y.
Behind the steep rises in cargo volumes is the airport's role since April 2012 as a transfer point for ISAF supplies to Afghanistan carried primarily by US airlines National Air Cargo and Kalitta Air, accounting for some 70 percent of all cargo through Riga Airport.
The airport now hopes for a similar future role as a logistics hub for home-bound shipments from Afghanistan as US and other remaining ISAF forces wind down their combat involvement in the country starting from 2014.
