Nov 27, 2013 (newstodate): A new master plan for the development of Iceland's Reykjavik City has been confirmed by the politicians, with a bearing on the future for the city's Reykjavik Airport.
The airport remains a hot topic on Iceland, and it is surviving only by sustained prolongations of its operational permit while many ideas have been formulated for alternative use of the area.
Under the current agreement reached in 2008, the airport was granted operational status until 2016 - but according to the new master plan, the time limit has again been pushed by another six years, to 2022.
The airport is used for domestic and corporate flights as well as ferry flights between USA and Europe.
Reykjavik Airport is located close to the city centre, while the international airport at Keflavik is some 40 km away.
