Nov 21, 2013 (newstodate): The replacement earlier this month of Atlantic Airways' CEO for more than 18 years signals a reassessment of the carrier's strategy.
Filling the position after Magni Arge, the new man at the helmet is Jorgen Holme designated as CEO ad-interim as "the Board of Directors wants the company to move in a new direction" as stated by a release.
According to the statement, the transition period is expected to last for one or two years.
While no further information has been provided by the board, speculations on the Faroe Islands are that the issue is the continued build-up of a fleet now comprising three Airbus A319 aircraft.
Industry sources say while the Airbus A319 is an ideal aircraft to operate the trunk route between Vagar Airport and Copenhagen Airport, three such aircraft do not provide flexibility to gradually expand the carrier's network into destinations that would require rather higher frequency of flights by smaller aircraft with less passenger seats.
With the fleet of three Airbus A319 aircraft, Atlantic Airways has landed contracts with Danish tour operators for charter flights from Danish airports, while the carrier has also offered seasonal flights from Vagar to European leisure destinations.
-Atlantic Airways should instead work out a strategy for widening the route network to comprise more direct flight options between the Faroe Islands and European and Scandinavian destinations like for instance Billund Airport, says one aviation source at the Faroe Islands.
