Nov 29, 2013 (newstodate): As a rare sign of life, the US project for setting up a new carrier Baltia Airlines seems to be taking a further step towards a future launch of services.
The carrier under formation has started training for its initial cadre of pilots., with a seven-week course from November 11, 2013, consisting of non-aircraft specific courses, aircraft specific courses and simulator sessions.
The pilot training is being accomplished at a certified state-of-the-art airline training facility in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
The project was actually first heard of in 1989, in November 2009 it reportedly acquired its first aircraft, an aging ex-TAP Boeing 747-200, also in 2009 the carrier received its Final Order from the United States Department of Transportation, its Frequency Allocation, FAA departure and arrival slots at JFK, and its IATA Code.
In April 2010, Baltia Air Lines contracted Cargo Terminal Pulkovo to provide handling of import and export cargo and mail, ramp services, and shipping document processing.
In February 2009, DOT approved the airline's application for launching services between New York and St Petersburg, Russia, and further down the line are plans for routes from New York to Moscow, Kiev, Minsk, and Riga.
A second Boeing 747-200 was acquired in 2011 from Kalitta Air and has now been painted in the carrier's livery.
Baltia is still awaiting its Air Carrier Certification from FAA, and no launch date has yet been announced.
