Oct 11, 2013 (newstodate): Compared to earlier expectations, Swissport's move into the SAS Group's handling company SGH is on a modest scale.
-With just a 10 percent stake in the Scandinavian company, Swissport will take one seat in the company's board, but as a minority shareholder Swissport will not become part of the operations, says Sabine Meinitz, Swissport International Ltd.
-Swissport acquires a 10 percent stake in each of SGH Sweden, SGH Norway and SGH Denmark, SAS' three ground handling companies, says Ms Meinitz.
This remains a far cry from the content of the release issued in March 2013, according to which Swissport with 49 percent of the stake would take over both management and operations of the joint-venture with SGH prior to the eventual full acquisition expected by the end of 2013.
Swissport is already present in Copenhagen Airport since July 1, 2012, when its started cargo handling by taking over the former Novia Cargo Terminal on the airport's eastern premises, left vacant after Spirit Air Cargo Handling's move to facilities immediately adjoining the passenger aircraft apron from March 13, 2012.
In a Nordic context, Swissport first established itself at Finland's Helsinki Vantaa Airport from December 1, 2011, with Finnair as its launch customer and providing baggage and apron services under a five-year contract.
