Oct 08, 2013 (newstodate): While cargo statistics for September 2013 are still pending, Stockholm Arlanda Airport is rather satisfied with developments in 2013.
-We have seen trends improving in August 2013, and Swedish forwarders also confirm that export volumes are on the increase, with import volumes are also showing signs of recovery after a prolonged period of recession, says Karsten Bjarbo, Swedavia Stockholm Arlanda cargo manager.
-Contributing to this is also signs of a marked return from sea to air transportation of cargo, probably driven by a hike in consumers' internet trade.
-One highly encouraging development is the opening of Emirates' daily passenger flights from September 4, 2013, between Dubai and Stockholm Arlanda which has not just eaten into other carriers' markets as might be feared, but has in effect added to the growth of air cargo at Stockholm Arlanda through the enhanced offering of onward cargo transfer to the carrier's extensive and growing network.
-I would of course like to see Stockholm Arlanda Airport overtaking Copenhagen Airport in cargo volumes and growth. But more realistically, we are considering Copenhagen not just a competitor, but also a partner in our common efforts to turn the attention among international airlines to Scandinavia as a region.
-Without the volumes at Copenhagen it would be much more difficult for Stockholm Arlanda to make its bid for a role in the global air cargo industry, says Mr Bjarbo.
