Oct 15, 2013 (newstodate): ICAO has again come out in support of Azerbaijan's stance against opening air traffic at an airport in Nagorno-Karabagh.
Stepanakert Airport, in the disputed Nagorno-Karabagh region under de-facto Armenian control since the war with Azerbaijan in the 90ies, has been inoperative ever since, but plans have repeatedly been aired for reopening of traffic since the airport's commissioning in 2009.
Armenia is urging the opening of flights to Yerevan, but Azerbaijan has gone so far as to threatening to shoot down any aircraft operating into or from the airport, while Nagorno-Karabagh's senior leader has said he wants to be on board for the opening flight.
Now, ICAO has again confirmed its disapproval of attempts to open regular flights to the airport, confirmed by the organization's
Secretary General Raymond Benjamin during a meeting with the Azer delegation at the recent session of the ICAO assembly in Montreal.
According to UN, the territory is part of Azerbaijan and illegally occupied by Armenia.
