Oct 04, 2013 (newstodate): Air Armenia is to perform its first flight on its new route between Armenia and Russia on October 27, 2013.
The privately-owned carrier has obtained a license for the route between Yerevan and Moscow as an element in Armenia's efforts to fill the void after the demise of the country's former national carrier Armavia that went bust earlier this year which has so far only been filled by foreign airlines.
Flights will be operated with a leased Boeing 737 aircraft from the start, later to be replaced by Airbus A320, of which the carrier has placed orders for two aircraft.
Plans are to add flights by Air Armenia to other destinations in Russia including St. Petersburg, Sochi, Rostov, Krasnodar and Samara starting from early November.
Instead of relying on only one national carrier, Armenia will build on three such carriers, designated to serve Europe, CIS and the Middle East, respectively.
Beside Air Armenia, Armenian International Airways and Krunk Air have been mentioned as possible new national carriers.
