Jan 04, 2013 (newstodate): Ukrainian carrier Aerosvit has filed for bankruptcy at Ukraine's Kiev Commercial Court, and a liquidator has been appointed to evaluate the assets of the airline.
It has long been known that the airline was in dire financial straits, and several airports and airnav authorities have been forced to suspend services to the airline due to unpaid bills and charges.
In recent moves, another Ukrainian carrier Ukraine International Airlines has taken over most of the operations provided by Aerosvit, but it remains an unsolved question exactly what are the ownership connections between the two airlines.
According to industry sources, the ownership of UIA is now under the control of a Cyprus-based investment group, Ontobet Promotions that holds 26 percent of the stake, with another 74 percent already in the hands of another Cyprus-based group, Capital Investment Project.
Speculations are that Ontobet Promotions is controlled by Privat Group, owned by Igor Kolomoyskyi who is also at the helmet of Aerosvit Airlines, Dniproavia and Donbassaero.
