Jan 25, 2013 (newstodate): 2012 proved a year of strong progress in cargo and passenger volumes at Erbil International Airport in Iraq's Kurdish region.
A total of 27,849 tonnes of cargo was handled at the airport - an increase by 54 percent, y-o-y.
The bulk of the cargo was generated by 17 weekly cargo flights, bringing in 550 tonnes of cargo securing record growth in 2012 reflecting the sound development of the region's economy that drives the increasing demand for cargo imports.
Scheduled freighter operators include Emirates SkyCargo, Etihad Crystal Cargo and Royal Jordanian Cargo.
On the passenger side, volumes soared by another 53 percent to a total of 947,600 passengers at Erbil International Airport.
The airport has one 4,800m runway certified for ILS CAT II operations.
