Jan 15, 2013 (newstodate): Reporting steep growth month by month in cargo volumes since April, Riga Airport reached record-high levels in volumes in 2012.
A total of 32,953 tonnes of cargo was handled at the airport, an increase by 160.2 percent, y-o-y.
Starting from April 2012, Riga Airport has served as a transfer point for ISAF supplies to Afghanistan, and the airport now hopes for a future role as a logistics hub for shipments from Afghanistan as US and other ISAF forces wind down their combat involvement in Afghanistan in 2014.
The ISAF air transport services to and from Afghanistan via Riga Airport are provided by the US carriers National Air Cargo and Kallitta Air with three daily Boeing 747 freighter rotations contributing 61 percent of all cargo at Riga Airport in 2012.
Besides these significant airlines, the Latvian carrier airBaltic is the leading commercial carrier at Riga Airport that serves as the airline's hub.
In 2012 airBaltic generated a total of 7,727 tonnes of cargo at Riga, seven percent above volumes in 2011.
