Jan 24, 2013 (newstodate): Officially opened only on July 16, 2012, Poland's new Modlin Airport has come off to a difficult start.
Located 40 km from Warsaw and dedicated to serving low-cost operators, the airport expected to be handling up to two mio passengers in its first year of operations, with Ryanair and WIZZ Air among its first customers.
On December 22, 2012, already, the runway was closed after being shortened from 2,500 to 1,500 m due to surface problems that needed immediate action.
The runway is thus being resurfaced and was expected to reopen in January 2013.
The work, however, has still not been completed, and the airlines remain relocated to Warsaw Chopin Airport for an indefinite period of time stretching at least into spring.
