Jan 17, 2013 (newstodate): Hopes for a resumption of production of the Russian AN-124 Ruslan freighter are now waning.
Earlier, the Russian ministry of defence aired plans for ordering up to 40 new AN-124 freighters for military purposes, and this would have boosted plans for production of Ruslan freighter for commercial use also.
These plans have now, however, been abandoned and Russia will instead focus on other military freighter programs.
Russia's Volga-Dnepr Group that already operates a fleet of 10 AN-124-100 aircraft was reportedly negotiating with United Aircraft Corporation for acquisition of no less than 40 AN-124-100 aircraft.
Production of the AN-124-100 freighter was suspended in 2001, but many efforts have since been made to revive the program.
