Jan 07, 2013 (newstodate): Finnair Cargo is on the offensive in 2013 with the opening of a new European freighter hub as well as the launch of two new freighter destinations.
Starting from April 2013, Finnair Cargo will open Brussels Zaventem Airport as its new freighter hub in Continental Europe to complement the service via Finnair's home hub at Helsinki Airport.
Finnair Cargo will initiate the Brussels freighter hub with weekly MD-11 freighter services, connecting Brussels with New York JFK, Chicago O'Hare and Finnair's Helsinki hub with non-stop freighter flights connecting with the carrier's Asian traffic.
In the new freighter schedule, Finnair Cargo will call at Brussels two times weekly - one on the flight New York-Brussels-Helsinki-Hong Kong on Saturdays, and another on the flight Hong Kong-Helsinki-Brussels-Chicago on Sundays.
Details on the launch dates of these service are yet to be announced.
In the new freighter program, Finnair Cargo will also operate Chicago-Helsinki-Mumbai on Mondays, Mumbai-Helsinki on Tuesdays, Helsinki-Hong Kong on Wednesdays, Hong Kong-Helsinki and Helsinki-Mumbai on Thursdays, and finally Mumbai-Helsinki-New York on Fridays.
The new strategy follows on a period with limited freighter traffic as seen in the latest statistics.
Finnair's freighter program earlier included flights to Seoul and Shanghai, but these destinations were suspended from July and March, 2012, respectively, and have not reappeared in the new program.
First launched on May 12, 2010, Finnair's freighter traffic is now provided by the Helsinki-based capacity provider Nordic Global Airlines Ltd.
