Jan 09, 2013 (newstodate): Despite a slack December, the Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport ended the year 2012 on a high note in cargo and passenger volumes.
A total of 399 tonnes of cargo was handled at the airport - an increase by 53.2 percent, y-o-y, while mail volumes declined by 16.7 percent, to 212 tonnes.
In December alone, the airport handled only 25 tonnes of cargo, which was a drop by 15.2 percent, y-o-y.
Mail volumes in December also fell 35.2 percent to 16 tonnes during the month.
Passenger-wise, the airport reached record-high levels in 2012 with an increase by 10.2 percent, y-o-y, to 225,532 passengers.
The significant over-all growth in cargo and passenger volumes came as a result from the major redevelopment of the airport's infrastructure including the extension of the runway from 1,250 to 1,799m and new airnav equipment.
The new infrastructure has increased regularity of flights and attracted much new traffic to the airport, including en-route technical stops on flights between North America and Europe with corporate and private aircraft.
To further enhance the attraction of the airport, a new airport terminal will be opened by spring 2014, replacing the current terminal that was built in 1978, when annual passenger figures totaled only 46,525.
