Jan 08, 2013 (newstodate): Work is now progressing for construction of a new passenger terminal at Tajikistan's Dushanbe Airport.
Driving the process is the French company Vinci Airport that took over the project after another French company, Sofrema that proved unable to meet plans and deadlines which has seriously delayed the project that was earlier slated for completion by end of 2011 already.
The contract with Vinci was signed on April 27, 2012, and physical construction works were resumed from December 28, 2012.
The construction process will now run for 23 months, ending up with a new 11,000 sq m passenger terminal with capacity of handling 500 passengers per hour and increasing the airport's capacity by 2.5 times.
Also in the reconstruction program is the construction of a new ATC tower, three new taxiways, aircraft parking stands and a new apron area.
The airport has one 3,100m runway and is home base for Tajik Air and the privately-owned carrier Somon Air.
