Jan 04, 2013 (newstodate): Big times are ahead for Norway's Stavanger Sola Airport.
Work on a new strategy for the airport is now in the final stages, with a master plan to be finalized after a last round of hearings in January.
-There are huge potentials for developing the role of Stavanger Sola Airport that serves an important industrial region housing the main part of Norway's off-shore companies, says Leif Anker Lorentzen, Stavanger Sola Airport Manager.
-Oil and gas industries are thriving, and needs for suppliers and support services are growing as well, leading to steep growth in demand for logistics services including road and air transportation.
-The work with the new strategy and the airport master plan has also deepened our understanding of the common success criteria by both the airport and the region. A positive development of one side of this equation presupposes and drives the positive development of the other side as well, and this forms a strong basis for decisions concerning development of the airport over the coming 10 or more years.
-We also agree that we have to jointly develop new business concepts to balance the current situation that relies almost exclusively on one leg only - the off-share industries and their requirements. In this, airport and society are agreed on needs for steps towards innovation.
-The airport currently has two runways at 2,556 and 2,449m respectively, and plans are on the table for construction of a third 1,200m runway dedicated to helicopter traffic serving the North Sea exploration and drilling sites.
-Other infrastructure elements will include a new terminal area with facilities dedicated to the growing international traffic, but this will all be presented in the coming master plan to be confirmed over the next few weeks, says Mr Lorentzen.
