Jan 09, 2013 (newstodate): Iceland's Keflavik Airport saw a healthy growth returning in 2012.
2012 actually set a new record in the airport's passenger volumes that reached a total of 2,380,216 passengers, up 12.7 percent y-o-y.
Cargo volumes also increased by six percent over 2011, to a total of 40,169 tonnes.
Included in the total cargo volumes were 24,883 tonnes of export cargo, up 9.13 percent, y-o-y, and 11,793 tonnes of import cargo, almost unchanged at plus 0.33 percent, y-o-y.
The airport also handled a total of 1,187 tonnes of mail, down 0.34 percent.
The airport is upbeat about further growth in 2013 as the home carrier Icelandair has announced a 15 percent increase in 2013, and new operators have entered the market.
WOW Air, established in 2012, has taken over most of the former Iceland Express operation, and easyJet and Norwegian started year round operation in 2012.
To facilitate the sustained growth in traffic, Keflavik International Airport is now redeveloping and expanding the passenger and terminal facilities expected to be in place before the start of the summer schedule.
