Jan 08, 2013 (newstodate): Finnair Cargo saw only a modest rise in cargo volumes in 2012.
A total of 148,132 tonnes of cargo was carrier by the company - up only 1.5 percent, y-o-y.
Of the total volume, 114,859 tonnes were carried as belly cargo on Finnair's regular passenger flights while another 33,041 tonnes were lifted by freighters, increasing in 2012 by 2.9 and 1.5 percent, y-o-y.
Finnair has targeted Asia as its prime asset, and the carrier's Asian volumes rose by 6.4 percent, y-o-y, to 84,213 tonnes, corresponding to 57 percent of the total volume, and this was the only segment with growth figures.
The European, North Atlantic and domestic cargo volumes were all down, by 4.8, 6.5, and 9.1 percent, respectively.
December 2012 certainly provided no relief as total volumes dipped 5.9 percent, y-o-y, to 11,201 tonnes, reflecting a drop by 44.4 percent in volumes on freighters, 1,922 tonnes, or only 17 percent.
As reported yesterday, Finnair Cargo has announced the opening of a new European hub at Brussels from March 2013, as well as the addition of Brussels and Chicago as new destinations on a renovated freighter schedule.
