Sep 26, 2012 (newstodate): The Russian state has now decided on a new nomenclature for its airports.
Russia currently has a total of 325 airports that will now be classified into three categories according to their federal, regional or local importance.
The individual airports will now have access to federal investments according to their classification.
The classification does not necessarily concur with issues of ownership by either of the three levels of government, but access to funding will reflect the operational and strategic importance of each airport as seen by the state.
In 2010, 328 airports were registered in Russia, down from 973 in 1992 when efforts to close under-developed facilities started.
In 2006, Russia had a total of 393 operational commercial airports, of which only 69 operated according to international standards.
