Sep 17, 2012 (newstodate): Latvia's Riga airport continued its impressive growth in cargo volumes during august 2012.
A total of 2,851 tonnes of cargo and mail was handled at the airport, an increase by 165 percent, y-o-y.
Both exports and imports were up by 209 and 131 percent compared to last year, to 1,429 and 1,412 tonnes, respectively.
Since April 2012, Riga Airport has played a role as a key European hub for ISAF's support operations, and the giant leap in volumes reflects the sustained traffic by US carriers involved in the operations.
During the first eight months of this year, the airport has handled a total of 22,783 tonnes of cargo and mail, up 181.7 percent, y-o-y.
During the same period, the Latvian carrier airBaltic generated a total of 4,906 tonnes of cargo at Riga Airport, down 3.3 percent, y-o-y.
