Sep 27, 2012 (newstodate): The issue of a dedicated freighter service on the Faroe Islands attracts much positive attention.
-If a freighter service was established, we would certainly take a positive and close look to see how we could benefit as to exports of fresh seafood products to our markets, says Olavur Bjarkhamar, Delta Seafood production manager.
-Last year we exported some 600 tonnes of fresh seafood by ship from the Faroe Islands to our markets in Germany and France. The shipments were sent on Fridays and arrived with the customers on Monday. Air transport would surely reduce total lead times significantly.
-One thing is that we might be in a position to better serve our existing export markets, but air transport would also open potentials for sales on new markets hitherto outside our reach.
-A crucial issue would of course remain price as transportation by air would be much more expensive, compared to today's maritime and road transport solutions. So given the option, we would monitor the markets closely to see if and where customers would accept higher prices for our products.
-But Delta Seafood would definitely be interested in looking deeper into the issue of a dedicated freighter service and would welcome the initiative, says Mr Bjarkhamar.
