Sep 21, 2012 (newstodate): Work on a project for launching a freighter service to serve the Faroe Islands continues - and meeting positive response from many sides.
Among these is Posta, the Faroe Islands' postal service.
-We are definitely interested and very positive towards the project, says Joel undir Leitinum, Posta CEO.
-It would certainly be beneficial to have competition in the airfreight market, first of all to secure rates at realistic market levels.
-It is of course difficult to predict if there is a market for introducing a dedicated freighter here. The Faroe Islands are relatively close to continental Europe, and today most cargo is transported by sea.
-We are, however, seeing airfreight volumes growing substantially, and with a freighter service shippers might be expected to direct cargo now transported by sea to air transportation instead, gaining in lead times.
-Having said that, we are not short of uplift capacity now with the introduction of Atlantic Airways' Airbus A319 aircraft. Also mail volumes are decreasing, meaning that we have no problems in getting the mail in and out of the Faroe Islands.
-While total mail volumes are down, we are however seeing structural changes in the composition of the mail. As everywhere, letter mail volumes are declining while we are seeing an increase in parcels reflecting the impact from internet trade.
-This trend is still in its early stages at the Faroe Islands, but it is manifest, and parcel volumes will surely keep growing, says Mr Leitinum.
