Sep 20, 2012 (newstodate): Vagar Airport, in the Faroe Islands, reports sound growth in passenger volumes during August 2012.
After a slow period, the number of passengers through the airport increased by 15.7 percent, y-o-y, to 27,229.
While passenger figures on most route to and from the Faroe Islands were up during the month, increasing traffic driven by the start of Statoil oil explorations is also behind the positive growth.
This traffic is primarily seen on the route between the Faroe Islands and Bergen, in Norway, and Atlantic Airways is now planning to turn the seasonal route into a permanent service to meet the growing demand in the industry.
In August 2012, cargo through the airport increased by 16.1 percent, y-o-y, to 36.7 tonnes, while mail volumes were down 21.6 percent to 15.2 tonnes.
During January-August 2012, the airport handled 273 tonnes of cargo, up 83 percent, and 137 tonnes of mail, down 15.1 percent, y-o-y.
