Sep 27, 2012 (newstodate): The Lithuanian airport handling provider Baltic Ground Services is entering a new European market.
After obtaining the required certificate from the Italian Civil Aviation Administration, Baltic Ground Services IT has gained the right to start providing a full scope of ground handling services in the international Lamezia Terme Airport, Italy.
BGS Italy expects to launch services before the end of 2012 and plans for further expansion into other airports in the Italian market.
The Italian debut marks the company's first expansion beyond the Baltic and Polish markets where BGS is now servicing airlines at Vilnius and Palanga in Lithuania as well as at the largest six airports in Poland - Warsaw, Wroclaw, Krakow, Gdansk, Poznan and Katowice.
BGS already worked for an opening of business in Italy in 2011, aiming at services at Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa airports - but these plans never materialized.
-Now we have landed the certificate to operate at this small Calabrian airport, and this will make it much easier for us to expand to other Italian airports as opportunities arise, says Saulius Batavicius, GGS CEO.
Lamezia Terme Airport is served by some 20 airlines, but in most cases on a seasonal basis only.
