Sep 28, 2012 (newstodate): The first flights from Nagorno-Karabagh's Stepanakert Airport are due "within the next few days", according to media reports.
Stepanakert Airport, in the disputed Nagorno-Karabagh region, under de-facto Armenian control since the war with Azerbaijan in the 90ies, has been inoperative for 20 years, but plans are to reopen it with flights connecting it to Yerevan Airport in Armenia.
Over the last four years, Armenia has repeatedly announced the imminent start of flight operations, and each time Azerbaijan has responded with threats to obstruct such operations, or even shooting down any aircraft attempting to open traffic at Stepanakert Airport.
Since 2011 the airport has been fully operational, and three Canadair CRJ200 aircraft in the colors of the new carrier Artsakh Air have been standing idle on the tarmac.
