Sep 04, 2012 (newstodate): Search and rescue operations around Greenland in the Arctic region requires helicopter equipment. But the situation is still fluid..
Air Greenland has placed orders for two Eurocopter EC225 Super Pumas, to be delivered in 2014.
The new aircraft will replace the carrier's two remaining and aging Sikorsky S-61 helicopters now providing the services.
Air Greenland, however, wants to phase out the S-61 immediately unless the Greenland home-rule government signs a two-year contract to secure the sustained operational and not least heavy maintenance costs of the Sikorskys.
-Politicians have repeatedly stated their intentions to secure the existence of a credible SAR service in the region, but so far this has not translated into a valid and binding contract, says Michael Binzer, Air Greenland CEO.
-If a contract is not signed and sealed, I would be only happy to scrap the remaining two S-61 helicopters immediately from January 1, 2013, says Mr Binzer.
