Aug 06, 2012 (newstodate): The Anglo-Swedish regional cargo airline, West Atlantic is planning for an increase of its jet freighter fleet.
Already Europe's largest cargo airline with a fleet comprising about 50 aircraft, notably 43 ATP turboprop freighters, West Atlantic sees a demand for longer-range jet freighters and will take in a yet-unannounced number of Boeing 737-400F converted freighter aircraft.
The carrier already operates two Boeing 737-300F aircraft and has also wet-leased a third Boeing 737-300F from the Icelandic company Bluebird Cargo.
West Atlantic was poised to become the launch operator of the converted Airbus A320 freighter with orders for up to seven aircraft, but these plans were stalled by Airbus' decision to cancel the conversion program.
The only viable solution to the airline's quest for medium-range jet freighters are thus converted Boeing 737 aircraft that are now in a plenty as airlines phase them out in favor of more fuel-efficient and cost-operative aircraft.
