Aug 27, 2012 (newstodate): With two-thirds of all Russian flights connecting via Moscow's three congested airports, the country is in dire need of a more de-centralized airport infrastructure.
Today three privately-owned airport groups are active in the country's aviation market - Renova, Basel Aero, and Novaport.
Expectations are that airports with private investors will in the future attract increasing state investments in runway and other infrastructure that remain state property, allowing more inter-regional traffic systems to develop.
Together, these three airport groups are in control of 15 Russian airports.
Novaport owns 38 percent in Novosibirsk Tolmachevo Airport, 48 percent of the stake in Barnaul Airport, 68 percent of the shares in Chelyabinsk Airport, 74,9 percent of the stakes in Tomsk Bogashevo Airport, and all shares in the Chita Kadala Airport.
RENOVA has set up a regional airport holding company that is already behind Koltsovo Airport, serving Ekaterinburg. Next in the pipeline of membership is Nizhny Novgorod Strigino Airport, while the airports of Rostov-on-Don, Samara, Volgograd, and Novosibirsk are under consideration.
Basel Aero, part of the Basic Element Group's Aviation Sector, operates the first new civilian airport built in Russia for 25 years, Gelendzhik Airport as well as the airports in Krasnodar, Sochi, and Anapa.
