Aug 17, 2012 (newstodate): Air cargo volumes are decreasing in 2012 at Poland's Katowice Airport.
During the first half of this year, volumes have dropped by 52.6 percent, y-o-y, to a total of 5,750 tonnes.
Except for April 2012 that saw an increase by 2.6 percent to 964 tonnes, all other months have seen a drop, including June 2012 where volumes were down by 4.8 percent, y-o-y, to 933 tonnes.
Air traffic at the airport is strongly dominated by WIZZ Air, Ryanair and charter operators that do not provide cargo uplift capacity, while traffic by legacy carrier including Lufthansa, SAS and LOT is provided with smaller regional jet aircraft with limited cargo space.
The bulk of the cargo at Katowice Airport is thus provided by ad-hoc cargo charter operations.
In 2011, a total of 12,138 tonnes of air cargo was handled at the airport, an increase by eight percent, y-o-y.
