Aug 29, 2012 (newstodate): Georgia's new Kutaisi International Airport is now in the final stages of opening for traffic.
One of three international airports in Georgia after Tblisi and Batumi, Kutaisi Int'l Airport has a 2,600 m runway to serve both own operations as well as providing a new alternate airport for international air traffic.
The airport received its first aircraft on August 28, 2012, as a Boeing 747 freighter from the Georgian cargo carrier New Georgia was handled.
The carrier was first presented at Tbilisi Airport in June, 2012, with two Boeing 747-200 converted freighters in the fleet.
The official opening of the Category A airport will be on September 27, 2012, as launch customer Wizz Air Ukraine starts operations on the route between Kutaisi and Kiev.
Soon to follow will be other low-cost operations from Kutaisi to France, Germany and Belgium.
