Aug 09, 2012 (newstodate): The Latvian carrier airBaltic seems to be well underway in realizing its new strategy, ReShape announced in March 2012.
According the H1 2012 report, airBaltic achieved a 50 percent y-o-y improvement of its net result, even exceeding the planned target.
In the first six months of the year, airBaltic operated 23,750 flights, down 15 percent y-o-y, but through enhanced capacity management the carrier increased the load factor by one percentage-point to 72, and served 1,4 million passengers.
Now serving 60 destinations with direct flights from its home base in Riga, Latvia, airBaltic aims to return the carrier to profitability in 2014 - in sharp contrast to the situation culminating in the autumn of 2011 when the airline was reportedly on the brink of bankruptcy.
In July 2012, airBaltic signed a LoI with Bombardier for delivery of 10 CS300 aircraft and purchase rights for a further 10 CS300 aircraft.
The new fleet of medium-range aircraft is to be delivered from 2015, replacing the Boeing 737-300 and 737-500 aircraft and complementing the carrier's existing fleet of eight Bombardier Q400 aircraft used on regional routes. The carrier will also expand the Q400 fleet with a further five aircraft.
