Aug 06, 2012 (newstodate): So far, Bishkek's Manas International Airport in Kyrgyzstan has thrived on traffic by US military to and from Afghanistan.
This traffic will cease from 2014 when the current contract between USA and Kyrgyzstan expires, and Kyrgyzstan is now eager to see traffic by international airlines at Manas Air Transit Center.
A top-ranking Lufthansa executive responsible for the carrier's network planning has been visiting Bishkek, meeting with Kyrgyz authorities to discuss potentials for using the airport as a stop-over point on routes between Europe and Southeast Asia.
After the expiry of the contract with the US forces, Manas International Airport will be turned into a civilian airport as well as a future logistics center in the region.
The airport is in the process of upgrading its infrastructure including the acquisition of new material, recently taking delivery of three Vestergaard Elephant de-icing vehicles as well as 12 AXA power units produced by Danish manufacturers, new pax busses and other service vehicles.
