Aug 15, 2012 (newstodate): Cargo volumes through Iceland's Keflavik Airport are growing at a low pace, and the airport sees no need for developing the cargo infrastructure in the short term.
-There is really ample space for volumes to grow significantly before new cargo terminals or other facilities would be required, says Fridthor Eydal, Keflavik Airport PR officer.
-In 2011, Keflavik Airport handled 36,672 tonnes of airfreight which was up on the preceding year, but a far cry from the peak year of 2007 when a total of 59,742 tonnes were passing through Keflavik.
-If volumes should rise significantly again, we have much free and available capacity at the part of the airport formerly housing the USAF operations. In the meantime we are actually using some of the aircraft stands earlier dedicated to freighters for passenger aircraft on hard-stand with passengers being transported by buses to relieve the stress on the jet-bridges during peak hours, says Mr Eydal.
