Aug 02, 2012 (newstodate): Since July 31, 2012, Lithuania's second-largest airport Kaunas Airport has been managed by Commercial Manager Jurate Baltrusaityte, designated as interim General Manager.
Ms Baltrusaityte, with Kanuas Airport since 2003, took up the office as Kaunas Airport's general manager, Arijandas Sliupas resigned from his duties.
The change in top management came at a very crucial time for Kaunas Airport as Ryanair confirmed that they would narrow their flight map from Kaunas by moving five routes to Vilnius from November 7, 2012.
During the coming winter season Ryanair will thus continue its flights to Bristol, Dublin, Frankfurt Hahn and London Stansted from Kaunas Airport, while the carrier's flights to Brussels Charleroi, Leeds Bradford, Liverpool, Luton and Oslo Rygge will be transferred to Vilnius Airport.
Ryanair opened Kaunas Airport as its 40th base from May 2010, adding flights at Vilnius Airport from May 2011.
-We treasure our cooperation with Ryanair, but the move of these routes is of course a blow to us, says Ms Baltrusaityte.
-It is now my top-priority to seek to attract new carriers to the airport while nursing our existing airlines including Ryanair, airBaltic as WOW Air that will hopefully return their seasonal service to Iceland in 2013 as well.
-Kaunas Airport has also suffered a steep decline in the airfreight business when the Jade Air service from China stopped. So far we have not been able to recover this volume due to the general stagnation in the air cargo industry. But hopes remain to see airfreight returning to Kaunas Airport, and I am aware of various ideas and projects although I cannot say at this stage if or when they may materialize, says Ms Baltrusaityte.
