With the first phase of the project completed, the airport will have the capacity of serving up to four mio passengers and 10,000 tonnes of cargo.
With the winning project on the table, the next step will be to secure financing through foreign investors in a a Public-Private-Partnership arrangement for the development of the Crimean airport as worked out by Lufthansa Consulting that won its contract in October 2011.
Ukraine's second largest, Simferopol International Airport with one 3,701m runway was already poised for modernization in 2008, but plans were later hit by the economic crisis that forced the project to a stand-still.
