Aug 15, 2012 (newstodate): The demise of Malev has cost Hungary's Budapest Airport dearly.
The current estimates for Budapest Airport include a decrease by 10 to 13 percent in passenger volumes due to the shortfall of practically all transfer traffic - a drop by 99 percent, y-o-y.
While the airport has been successful in seeing point-to-point traffic building up again through 2012, the total volumes of air traffic movements have dropped by 20 percent - back to the level of 2002.
Most of the traffic at the airport is now generated by low-cost carrier that have collectively increased their share of the market from 26 percent in 20101 to 53 percent in July 2012.
The bleak picture by the passenger traffic is, however, not shared by the airport's cargo business.
Most of the air cargo through Budapest Airport is, and was, generated by freighter traffic that has remained largely unaffected by Malev's exit.
The airport thus expects cargo volumes in 2012 to around the levels of 2011, even allowing for a slight increase.
In 2011, the airport handled a total of 106,595 tonnes of cargo, an increase by 29 percent, y-o-y.
