Aug 16, 2012 (newstodate): The end of the Fokker 50 era with the Latvian carrier airBaltic is now closing in.
The airline will retire the last remaining Fokker 50 from service by November 1, 2012.
In the fleet now are still eight Fokker 50 aircraft, five of which are used on routes from Riga to Helsinki, Tampere, Lappeenranta, Tallinn, Vilnius, Palanga, Kaunas, Kaliningrad, Minsk, and Warsaw.
Originally, the Fokker 50 fleet was poised for retirement by 2014, later the decision was changed to 2013, then to 2011, but now eventually settled for 2012.
As replacement for the Fokker 50 capacity, airBaltic will take in a further five Bombardier Q400 aircraft from Denmark's aircraft leasing company Nordic Aviation Capital to supplement the existing fleet of eight Q400 aircraft.
airBaltic has, however, not so far announced the delivery dates for the three additional Bombardier aircraft.
