Jul 27, 2012 (newstodate): Despite a difficult period for airBaltic, the carrier has still managed to sustain its position in Latvia's airfreight market.
During January-June 2012, the carrier handled a total of 3,366 tonnes of cargo flown into and out of Riga Airport, the airline's hub in the Baltic region.
-This is actually a few percent above H1 in 2011, and considering the cuts in available capacity for cargo routes and the general state of the airfreight industry this is rather satisfactory, says Toms Andersons, airBaltic head of cargo.
Actually, the total cargo volume by airBaltic would even be somewhat bigger if cargo transported on road feeder services was included.
airBaltic normally held over 50 percent of the airfreight market in Latvia, but since the start of the non-commercial ISAF operations at Riga Airport from March 2012, the share has declined to around 18-20 percent, with "other carriers", primarily National Air Cargo and Kalitta Air operating the ISAF project, are now dominating the statistics with 65 percent of the total volumes handled.
