Jun 06, 2012 (newstodate): Estonia's Tallinn Airport continues the strong growth trend in air cargo volumes through May.
In May, a total of 2,213 tonnes of cargo and mail was handled at the airport, an increase by 36.2 percent, y-o-y.
Totals included 2,096 tonnes of cargo and 117 tonnes of mail, up 22.9 and 36 percent y-o-y, respectively.
The bulk of the loads was cargo imports, accounting for 1,931 tonnes.
During January-May 2012, the airport has thus handled a total of 9,148 tonnes of cargo and mail, an increase over last year by 63.4 percent.
Behind the strong increase in 2012 are the 35-40 monthly freighter flights by ULS from Turkey to Tallinn carrying transfer cargo destined for Russia, but rated as cargo imports.
Currently, these flights operate fully loaded into Tallinn and depart empty for Istanbul, either directly or via other European points where cargo can be found.
