Jun 18, 2012 (newstodate): Riga Airport is benefiting hugely in cargo growth from the daily freighter operations by carriers serving the ISAF forces.
In May 2012, the airport handled a total of 3,479 tonnes of cargo, 70 percent of which was generated by "other carriers" National Air Cargo and Kalitta Air that are now calling with three daily Boeing 747 freighter operations each lifting some 100 tonnes of equipment and supplies to the ISAF forces since the start of April this year.
Consequently airBaltic, earlier the dominating carrier in the airport's cargo statistics, has seen its market share falling to 18 percent, 633 tonnes, in May while earlier accounting for some 60 percent.
