Jun 22, 2012 (newstodate): A small group of aviation people is continuing work on a project for setting up a freighter service at the Faroe Islands.
-At present, the focal point of attention is securing the financing of the project, and this is of course not an easy task given today's financial environment, says a project spokesperson.
-We are, however, intent on pressing forward aiming at being in the market for the busy pre-Christmas season 2012.
-On the export side the target is the Faroe Islands' large and growing seafood production, and we are talking to companies engaged in this trade. The focus will be not just to offer a new venue to existing markets, but rather to aid the industry in opening up new market by offering new air logistics solutions.
-We are also aware that a balanced operation is crucial to obtain and secure profitability. Import volumes via Denmark are growing and probably exceeding the capacity of the currently only operator, Atlantic Airways. We would like to engage in this traffic as well, not excluding the possibility of seeking cooperation with Atlantic Airways rather than to compete head-on with them, which is of course the alternative.
-All in all, the project is complex and requiring several types of competencies to secure a successful development. We are, however, optimistic after being met with positive response from many sides, says the spokesman.
The export of salmon from the Faroe Islands totaled about 50,000 tonnes in 2011, with the US market as the largest importer of fresh salmon that account for almost 70 percent of the total production.
