Jun 05, 2012 (newstodate): Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Norway have taken a further step towards setting up the North European Functional Airspace Block, NEFAB.
A contract to the effect has been signed earlier this month by representatives from the civil aviation authorities concerned, and work will now progress towards meeting all the pertinent requirements of the EU Commission's Single European Sky project.
Expectations are that these requirements will be met by autumn 2012, pacing the road for air traffic management in the area on operational, rather than national levels.
The process was launched already in August 2011 when the transport ministers met in Reykjavik, Iceland, to sign a protocol on the formation of the North European Functional Airspace Block.
