Jun 06, 2012 (newstodate): Latvia's Riga Airport is beating any record in cargo growth in 2012.
In May 2012 the airport's cargo volumes increased by 238.8 percent, y-o-y, following on the growth in April 2012 by 657.2 percent, y-o-y.
In May, a total of 3,478 tonnes of cargo was handled at the airport with cargo accounting for 2,990 tonnes and mail 488 tonnes.
During January-May 2012, the airport's total volume has thus reached 14,038 tonnes, including 11,579 tonnes of cargo and 2,441 tonnes of mail, and up 189.7 percent, y-o-y.
Traditionally leading the market with a share around 50 percent of cargo, airBaltic is now reduced to a #2 position with only around 10 percent of the market that is since March 2012 dominated by ISAF cargo for Afghanistan, transported on US carriers.
