May 22, 2012 (newstodate): First Cimber Sterling, then Skyways: the Ukrainean money bag behind these two carriers, has now pulled the plug under Skyways, only weeks after letting Cimber Sterling go bankrupt.
The Swedish carrier and its subsidiary City Airlines filed for bankruptcy yesterday, and all activities have now been stalled.
In September 2010 SAS sold its 19.9 percent stake in Skyways, leaving the Swedish Salen Group in full control of the carrier.
In December 2010, Skyways was acquired by the Cyprus-based investment company Manswell Enterprises controlled by Igor Kolomoyski, and in May 2011 Skyways acquired the Swedish carrier City Airlines.
Skyways and city Airline operate flights on some 20 domestic routes in Sweden, and the demise of the carriers will now open the scene for a frenzy of competitors stepping in to fill the void.
Among these, the Finnish-UK flyBe Nordic is expected to move in to boost its plans for a net Nordic network.
Skyways has been using 11 Fokker 50 operated by Avia Express primarily on domestic routes in Sweden and international routes to Denmark and Norway.
City Airline operated six Embraer 145 and two Embraer 135 aircraft.
