May 31, 2012 (newstodate): Sweden's economy is rather strong, exports are growing - but airfreight volumes are dipping in 2012. How come?
-We have seen IATA air cargo volumes down by about 20 percent so far into 2012, compared to last year, which is rather surprising given the over-all growth in Sweden's economy that is certainly performing well in the Scandinavian context, says Bjorn Kardell, SAS Spirit Sweden managing director.
-One explanation might be that shipments earlier sent by air have been transferred to other modes of transportation from Sweden. But we lack reliable statistics to analyze this deeper.
-Another explanation might be that Swedish forwarders are increasingly consolidating their shipments outside Sweden, in Copenhagen or at other continental airports. Still, we have no figures to verify this.
-But while the trend in Sweden's 2012 airfreight volumes has been very negative during 2012, we may however have seen some stabilization over the last two or three months. Anyhow, I could not dare to predict where it will all end in 2012, says Mr Kardell.
