May 11, 2012 (newstodate): Sweden's airfreight market is depressed, as documented by statistics. But maybe it is not that bad, after all..
In Q1, 2012, air cargo volumes counted together at the airport Stockholm Arlanda and Gothenburg Landvetter dropped 22 percent, y-o-y.
Volumes at Stockholm Arlanda Airport were down 19 percent, while volumes at Gothenburg Landvetter Airport dropped even more - 27 percent, y-o-y.
-Volumes are certainly down in the first quarter of 2012. But percentages may be somewhat misleading, says Ylva Arvidsson, Swedavia Director Cargo.
-The fact is that Q1 2011 was extremely strong, with growth and high volumes at the two airports. This makes the situation look worse than it may actually be the case.
-It remains a fact, too, that the Swedish exporting industries have been hit by the global economic down-turn, but talks with freight forwarders and Swedish companies indicate that we are seeing first signs of recovery boding well for an improvement in the situation through the year.
-Expectations are that the performance in the coming months may show some recovery in airfreight volumes, but it is of course still too early at this stage to make any predictions about the full-year performance of cargo in the Swedish market, says Ms Arvidsson.
