May 14, 2012 (newstodate): Pending approval by authorities in Singapore and Europe, SAS and Singapore Airlines will set up a JV covering air traffic between Singapore and Scandinavia.
The JV now signed is a confirmation of the earlier MoU from January 12, 2012, and the plan is to include the co-ordination of flight schedules, joint sales activities and enhanced network connectivity.
The partnership is expected to lead to growth in existing air services between Singapore and Scandinavia, and, subject to market conditions at the appropriate time, pave the way for a new route between Singapore and Stockholm.
SIA currently operates three weekly flights between Singapore and Copenhagen in a codeshare partnership with SAS.
The JV partners plan to grow frequency on the existing route as warranted by the market, and also to include more destinations in Scandinavia.
The JV by the Star Alliance partners SAS and Singapore Airlines is also a move towards a stronger competition against Finnair that has been successful with its Asian strategy.
