May 14, 2012 (newstodate): Defying the over-all negative trend in Sweden's airfreight volumes in 2012, Jonkoping Airport is still seeing strong growth in volumes.
In April, the airport saw volumes up by no less than 95 percent, compared to same month in 2011, and reports a growth by 61 percent, y-o-y, in volumes during January-April 2012.
In week 18, 2012, the airport also set a new record in daily volumes with 38 tonnes of cargo and mail handled in 24 hours, compared to the average of 20 tonnes per day in 2011.
The significant driver behind the airport's growth is TNT's In-night product where time-sensitive shipments are flown from TNT's hub at Brussels into the Scandinavian markets via Jonkoping on BAe freighters continuing to Helsinki with shipments to Finland and the Baltic markets, while shipments to Denmark and Norway are transferred to Oslo and Billund.
Now further boosting the growth is time:matters Spare Parts Logistics that works with TNT to lift time:matters' shipments into its flights route net via Jonkoping Airport.
On the other hand, Post Sweden has decided to shift from air to rail in part of its postal logistics, and one consequence of this is the end of using Jonkoping Airport as a "mini-hub" since 2007 with five weekly night operations between Jonkoping Airport and Gothenburg, Malmoe, Sundsvall, Umeaa and Arlanda by Amapola and West Atlantic.
After July 1, 2012, the only postal flight to continue will then be the flight between Jonkoping Airport and Stockholm Arlanda Airport operated by West Atlantic.
In 2011 Jonkoping Airport handled a total of 5,456 tonnes of cargo and mail, an increase by 16 percent, y-o-y.
