May 10, 2012 (newstodate): Lithuania's Siauliai International Airport is again flying in turbulence.
According to sources, the airport's director is now on a prolonged leave after encountering allegations of vested interests colliding with his office, and in the meantime a working group has been established by the airport owner, Siauliai Municipality and headed by Daiva Matoniene, a deputy mayor of Siauliai.
The working group will analyze potentials for developing Siauliai Airport to accommodate commercial aviation, including air cargo operations with any size and type of aircraft.
Press reports even air the possibility of privatizing the airport to attract foreign investments and enhance management.
Commercial traffic at the airport that also serves military operations primarily comprises cargo flights, with Ukrainean AN-12 freighters bringing in shipments from Turkey destined for onward trucking to destinations in Russia, as well as occasional MNG Airlines Airbus A300 freighter flights with cattle exports to Turkey.
Siauliai Airport has also seen several freighter flights with cattle exports to Israel.
CAT 1 Siauliai Airport in northern Lithuania is a former Soviet military airport currently without scheduled passenger or cargo operations but equipped with a new apron tower, ATC and other facilities under a EU project.
The airport has two asphalted runways - one 3,500m and one 3,280m, the longest runways in Lithuania.
